The study of Urogynecology refers to problems women may have with prolapse, or the dropping, of their pelvic structures and bladder. This may cause women to leak urine, possibly when they cough or laugh. Other effects are back pain, decreased sexual pleasure, vaginal pressure, excessive gas, or poor control of stool. An overactive bladder or inability to empty your bladder completely can also cause urine leakage. The valve between the bladder and urethra, known as the urethral sphincter, can also stop functioning and cause leakage. Concerns with these situations may effect younger women or mature women. The good news is that these conditions can be treated, and you can do all of the things you used to enjoy!
Our office provides testing to determine if bladder issues are truly your concern, or if we need to refer you to a urologist. Urodynamics testing is a painless procedure which determines if your bladder is providing you with it's intended support. This test also determines how severe your bladder functions have possibly decreased. Once the physician has this information, they will meet with you to discuss your options of treatment.
Surgical procedures are often the most effective treatment of these conditions; however, physical therapy maybe a consideration. Since each woman's condition is unique, you will need to discuss the appropriate surgery for you with the physician. Sometimes, the doctor will recommend a pubo vaginal sling to support the neck of the bladder. Rectocele and cystocele repairs refer to the prolapse of the anterior or posterior area of the vagina. These repairs may be corrected in conjunction with another surgery, possibly an anterior and rectocele repair.
Temporary treatment, like a pessary, may be suggested to give you immediate relief. A pessary is a small rubber device which fits inside the uterus to support the area that is weakened. This device may be removed for cleansing and replaced right at home. Ask our physicians if this may assist you until you schedule a surgery.
